The following is a list of Frequently Asked Questions about MonitorCam.
- What is the best screen resolution for running MonitorCam?
MonitorCam is best run with a screen resolution of 1024x768 or higher.
- Are low-cost products such as MonitorCam really effective for catching thieves?
Yes, even though products like MonitorCam (when compared to professional CCTV surveillance products) use inexpensive web cameras, they can serve as a real deterrant against crime. Some cases reported recently in the news testify to this:
Serial burglar caught on webcam (BBC, Wed, 16 Feb 2005 22:26GMT) and
Laptop helps man in Germany bust burglar in Brazil (CNN, December 14, 2006, 19:28 GMT).
- Can MonitorCam connect with more than one camera?
Unfortunately no. At the moment MonitorCam will connect with the first
active USB camera it finds. But multi-camera support together with
camera selection will be added in the next release.
- The picture from my camera is occasionally and suddenly changing brightness which is then generating false alarms.
This is probably caused by having the camera running with automatic gain control activated. The camera tries to adjust to sudden illumination changes in the scene, which in turn causes MonitorCam to generate a false alarm. It is recommended that in such situations automatic gain control is disabled. This can be done by opening the camera's property pages by pressing the Video Settings or Properties buttons.

- When using MAPI for email alerts, I get the error: Error opening Outbox!
Please make sure that Microsoft Outlook is configured to send emails, that it's connection to the Mail Server is up and running and that it is not running in 'offline' mode. You can check this by opening Microsoft Outlook and sending a test email. If the connection with your mail server is down, the test email will remain in the 'Outbox' folder.
- When starting MonitorCam I get the error: "ProxyTrans.ax could not be located, register it using RegSRVR 32.exe". What is wrong?
Proxytrans is a DirectShow filter required for certain web cameras. This filter is registered automatically by the MonitorCam installer. But it may happen that this initial registration fails for some reason or other. In such cases, you need to download the following file and run it on your computer to fix the problem. Please download it from here: RegisterProxytrans.exe. When you run this program you should get the following output indicating a successful registration of the Proxytrans filter:
