Removing Hot Pixels

Hot pixels can be quite annoying, especially in night time scenes. As mentioned earlier, some high-end camera models come with the option to map out hot pixels in their firmware which can be done either by the camera user himself/herself or by the manufacturer at a repair center. Another possibility is to use a software product that detects and eliminates hot pixels from your images. There are two types of products: those that use the so-called 'dark frame' technique and those that do not. The former are much more accurate, though they require a bit more work in generating and mantaining a dark frame.

HotPixelRemover

We, at lightning cube software, offer a product called HotPixelRemover that uses the dark frame technique to detect and remove hot pixels. This product works in tandem with HotPixelDetector and the dark frames and the output results of the first can be used by the other. Please visit our website in order to download HotPixelRemover.

Simply told, the process of removing hot pixels is best explained by the following diagram. A set of dark frames is mantained by this program and analysed for hot pixels. Given an image that contains hot pixels, the program will 'subtract' the hot pixels from the image.
